Writing a scope
What goes in a scope of work?
Every task the contractor is pricing, with enough detail that two contractors would bid the same job: the material, brand or grade, color or finish, and quantity. Add the dates, how you'll pay, and the terms you hold every contractor to.
How detailed should the specs be?
Detailed enough that you can check the work against them. "Paint walls" invites a cheap bid; "Two coats, Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray, eggshell, walls only" gets you comparable numbers and a clear walkthrough.
How do I compare bids?
Send the same scope to two or three contractors per trade and compare line by line. In Fixer Upper House you record each bid on its budget line and accepting one sets that line's budget.
